I now know that in English this means basically 'a system for moving files across networks'. Or even more plain, it is a system which can be used for -Website Publishing (hmm that will be useful when I get around to working out how to create one in the first place) - Uploading and downloading images, doc's, movies and music files (sounds like fun!)-sharing files with others (quite useful) - and to make back-ups of local and remote files.
"WHAT TO DO?"
DOWNLOAD AN FTP CLIENT..... check..... Decided to use 'Smartftp' URL http://www.smartftp.com on the advice of one who knows more than me! So far so good...
CONSULT HELP FILES IN FTP CLIENT SITE.......Got rather frustrated with that as once I found my way in to the Tutorial section and selected Introduction, everything slowed down. I took a break for afternoon tea and still it was loading........ Being the sort of person who moves on from a fishing spot if I don't catch a fish in the first half an hour, I chose to move right on in to my 'smartftp' and continue with the task in hand.
FTP TO recall.curtin.edu.au and USE ANONYMOUS LOG IN..... Hmmmm....... Well I found a window which requested teh server URL and so I typed recall. bla bla bla in there and then clicked the 'anonymous' box...........
What the????????????? All this stuff starts happening.......... files I have never seen before are scrolling before me...........
FIND THE FILE CALLED README, DOWNLOAD AND ANSWER THE Q. ACCORDING TO THE README FILE ______________ MATTERS.
When it stopped, I thought 'hmm, there must be a file in here somewhere. A quick poke around and there it was. Highlighted, right clicked and 'download as' and off it went again. At first I was a bit confused as to where it went, but eventually the penny dropped and I found it in 'my doc's'. ANSWER. CAPITILIZATION matters. Shame they spelt it wrong!
And so endeth my first experience of FTP. So much to learn........ so little time! I need to get in to the tutorials of ftp and spend a few hours absorbing. For me though it is better to just jump in there and attempt a task and learn as the mistakes happen.
I'm so happy to be at this stage of the unit. Moving ever onwards...........
