Module 4 - Evaluating the Web

"In your own words, write an annotation for the source which could communicate to a reader both your 'judgement' of the site according to what you have learnt from the tutorial, and also the following information":

* the reliability and authority of the site / source / article
* the main ideas or subjects discussed in the article
* the purpose for which the site was written (this might include any apparent external interest, intellectual motivation or contextual information)

Summary:

W3schools was started in January, 2000 as an Internet Developer's Portal. The family owned company is a Norwegian software development and consulting company focussing on client/server databases, data wharehousing and Internet Applications.

The sites authors have a combined 43 years of experience with Internet Applications. The site provides FREE access to tutorials and thousands of useful sources relating to Internet Development. W3schools is the largest web developer's site on the internet, serving more than 1.5 million page views every day.

The W3schools web site is of an unbiased nature and contains little advertising. It covers the topic enormously and is useful for any web developer, be they beginner or advanced. Visitor comments and testimonials verify the usefullness of this site, which is updated on a regular basis.

I have decided to add this site to my 'resources' bank for the reasons outlined above, and feel it will be one I will refer to time and time again in my future relationship with computers!

"Compare your final analysis and annotation with the material you saved for the last task, and think about these questions":

1. In terms of my own future use, and in answer to the unit question "which 'body ' of information (ie. the original 'snapshot' of the site, or your own, annotated, analytical version) would be most useful to refer back to?", my own version of usefullness of the site would be the body of information I would be most likely to refer to, rather than just a screen shot of the site which really tells me nothing by comparison.

2. In term of external users (i.e. if I included this site as a hyperlink or resource on a website) a well written annotated analytical break down would be of much more use, to assertain the validity and reliability of a web site - provided the author of the annotation is of a reliable source!
