Module 4 - Boolean Search Task

Taking the same key words of your last search, , think about how you would best search for the following:

* the biggest number of hits relating to 'advanced internet users'

Using 'google', I performed three searches for this one, and as I thought, the last one resulted in the highest number of hits:

Advanced Internet users
Result:
111,000,000 hits in 0.25 sec

Advanced OR internet users
Result:
986,000,000 hits in 0.14 sec

Advanced OR internet OR users
Result:
2,920,000,000 hits in 0.17 sec (didn't get time to read them all! LOL)

* information on 'advanced internet users' coming only from university sources.

Advanced internet OR university
Result:
315,000,000 hits in 0.12 sec

I did try using the AND command to reduce ther numbers but a pop up kept informing me that use of the AND was not necessary in google searches.

* sources relating to skills-based information on 'advanced internet users'

Advanced internet users OR skills
Result: 183,000,000 hits in 0.13 sec

Again, I performed a search using the AND command. Although google still said it was not necessary it did narrow down the search results to:
Result: 18,000,000 hits in .42 sec

An interesting exercise which shows that:

Use of OR results in the highest number of records

The more terms, the more records

Use of AND gives fewer results

Use of NOT gives even fewer
