Just uploaded the essay with 20 mins to go. It's almost midnight and there are a few of us left on line still giving it that last push. Kathleen and Melissa are out here with me. I have been working on the essay for most of today, with a short break in between to play with Molly, my devoted standard poodle who has been by my side for this entire unit - bless her heart!

In signing off I just want to say that it has been an absolute pleasure learning from you and also with such a wonderful bunch of class mates. THANK YOU sincerely from my heart.

Vaya con dios

Jac - over and out! :-) big smiliesJust Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-30605458344678992402007-02-22T15:20:00.000+08:002007-02-23T22:28:27.069+08:00Module 5: Last pushIt's incredible to believe that I have arrived at this point! At the beginning of this unit, I felt quite insecure and wondered what I had taken on. Many other students seemed to be very much more 'in control' than I, and I feel I have enlisted their assistance along the way more times than I have actually been able to return the gestures. I may lose marks on this point, due to lack of participation on the discussion forums. However, I have had to prioritise my actions and stick with reading critical material relevant to the course in favour of participating in 'equally as important' discussion.

I fell in to strife with my submission for the first assignment some weeks back, by not digesting the reading on plagurism. I got it wrong and received a zero grade :-( . Thankfully, my wonderful, understanding tutor who realised it was due to total ignorance on my part, gave me a second chance. My initial reaction was "I'm a failure, can't go on, etc etc", but with 'Cynth's' encouragement and a self 'pep talk', I sieved my way through the assignment with a fine tooth comb and attempted to rectify the problems, which basically were that I had not given correct reference to the 'concept doc's'.

I remained on tender hooks for the days to follow - kept looking in my drop box for my final grade that didn't come. My confidence continued to decline as I ploughed my way through Mod 5, struggling with the thought of writing the 1,500 word essay, which by the way is still in abeance as I write.

I have one set back after another this week, sickness, work, study overload, surprise house guests etc etc. I have asked Cynthia for a couple of day's extension on the essay. Haven't heard back from her yet and the assignment is due tomorrow.

Atleast I have today, uploaded all the other assignments due in various other units and this is the Last Push!

I have my title "The Internet - You can't avoid it", and have several Claims floating around on bits of paper. All I need to do now is make them land in logical order by this time tomorrow.

Not that anyone but Cynth will likely read this, but "wish me luck!" as they say....Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-8435009180207131342007-02-22T15:18:00.000+08:002007-02-24T11:29:43.398+08:00Module 5: Info - CommunicationWell although I have spent a reasonable amount of time reading through this part of the unit, time has got the best of me and I have been reluctant to add much to my learning blog- no doubt it will lose me 'brownie points' but I need to focus on 'the essay' from here onwards.

The most important thing I have gained from Mod 5 has been reading over and over and over............ the 'concept documents' (Allen, n.d.).. I have printed out all the shortened versions and they are finally sinking in - the light bulb is flashing etc!

I've decided that my main theme for the essay will revolve around the fact that, there is no escaping the Internet in our modern world and to have a clear 'conceptual' understanding of how the 'Net works will definitely enhance a user's skills and knowledge.

I confess that I have not spent too much time on the P2P part of this unit as, although it has been interesting discovering the art of being able to download movies, songs etc it is not really my interest at this point in time.

I have been re reading the important document relating to plagiarism, and must make sure I get all my referencing correct this time for the essay.

Got to move on now................ so little time (the story of my life)Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-87575449018395670662007-01-26T15:01:00.000+08:002007-01-26T15:15:24.306+08:00First Assignment Uploaded! Can't believe I have actually just uploaded the first assignment. Seems like it's ben living in my house or soooooo loong! I decided to stick with the 'Blog' format, as I had already set it up partially a few weeks ago before I had become more 'proficient' at HTML coding. In using wordpress.com I was able to actually add pages - something not available on 'blogspot.com' and I am quite happy with the layout of my Resource Project. Just hope Cynthia is happy with the content. She remarked recently that most of the marks for the assignment would come from the content more than the decor of the presentation.

Upon reflection, putting the resource site together has been a terrific learning curve for me, in that I now have a bank of excellent resources to call on in my future internet studies.

I am having a problem with my key board today - must be wearing it out!

Anyhow, here is a mug shot of my latest effort and for anyone interested, the URL is as follows: http://www.missj007.wordpress.com

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF6DJHpv9Olw1DXkLzO-ESkN3hMaZcV9m6UalS2lZDx0-tg-Sjs9rvc_qupLIXTXWrY2rfCmKDB4SAGBqJ1OHGZaEqSd95cS75q3oNXCOEhlAL-b6Gqr7DT1JG90c1HCOo0iLL2hD0vRc/s320/missjoo7.wordpress+copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024234031275734450" />Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-27984469250144538492007-01-20T10:37:00.000+08:002007-01-26T15:20:00.562+08:00Module 4 - The End!****** Yay! In term of external users (i.e. if I included this site as a hyperlink or resource on a website) a well written annotated analytical break down would be of much more use, to assertain the validity and reliability of a web site - provided the author of the annotation is of a reliable source!
Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-32039691366111909152007-01-20T10:34:00.000+08:002007-01-22T16:27:50.284+08:00Module 4 - Organising Search InformationFor this task I have chosen the three sites listed below as my best sources of information for Advanced Internet users.

I have decided to store them here on my learning blog, for easy access and retrieval because the free 'bookmark' site which isdownloadable from the 'net' has limited -30day- time period. I am really enjoying this unit, although my biggest issue so far is just keeping up. If the unit were not 'paced' with deadlines I fear I would still be engrossed in Module 1! I'm about a week behind schedule as I am only just beginning to get in to module 4, and the first assignment relating to mod's 1-4 is due by next Friday. At least I have set up my seperate blog to enter all the data for the assignment (see link at left).

Anyhow, on to the first task for this module...........

• In your learning log record which programs you downloaded and note which (if any) facets you think might prove useful.

Well now, I already had

Adobe PDF reader, as we receive quite a few PDF files via email and there are many web sites which contain PDF files.

Flash was already istalled on my pc but not sure I hve used it much up until now.

Windows Media player has always been my preferred option here - free and easy to use.

Quicktime was installed already and seems to be required in quite a few applications.

I installed

Windows Shock Wave as suggested in the reader as it will be of use to me in coming weeks in my web creations.

Real Player was suggested, but I did not install at this stage as I am limited to download space with my ISP for this month. Choose a style which is easy and appealing on the eye and interesting
to look at for the author as well as the visitor.

2. Don’t let the blog become too ‘cluttered’ on the main page
– be sure to select “archive” old posts regularly to avoid miles of
posts all at once.

3. Keep the posts of a reasonable length and break the content
up in to small paragraphs, with plenty of ‘white’ space.

4. Up-date the blog on a regular basis to avoid stale news, and respond
to any comments placed by visitors.

5. Do not reveal things like your home address, telephone numbers,
passwords etc to ANYONE no matter how trustworthy they may seem.Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-25067126417354358522007-01-19T15:49:00.000+08:002007-01-19T15:53:19.681+08:00Blogging FunIf I were advising a novice, wanting to have their own blog on what to look out for , I would firstly suggest they make themselves a bit of a list as to what they expect to be able to do on their blog and secondly, I would recommend they do a bit of research, either on the ‘net’ or in their local library to find out which would be the best option for them, dependant upon their individual needs.

A great little book I came across recently in my own local library, Cason, J. & Mcbride, N. (2006). Teach yourself blogging. London: Hodder Education, is a very useful resource for new and old bloggers. The book explains “what blogs are, how they work, and how to choose the right kind of blog for you”.

There are numerous blog hosting services available on the internet, and it is worth taking a look at a few before making a final decision. I would suggest looking at and comparing the tools on the following and take it from there:

http://wordpress.com

http://blogspot.com/

http://home.blogware.com/

Compare things on the service like the availability of comments, categories, blogroll lists, number of blogs, photo galleries, spam, visitor registration/login, type of templates available, ease of image uploading, password protection, to name a few.Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-50087454920951660312007-01-18T19:58:00.000+08:002007-01-18T20:04:25.977+08:00Hello PossumThis is a picture I took of a cute little honey possum on a recent trip to the Stirling Range National Park in the South West of WA.

Enjoy!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY0Xd6-cSBq9kkt0dCbxYn2uAJm3fLxduTYg4UPm5PcGQ1tdjBGdD1Rv8YBqP6QJCDP-RmbRqY7Hji6Et5vIH2CJHhDWyPLTA-9PJ8v6tvtAsf8l6Bdk0h9e2eU5lCIIh49_wZvVjqa5I/s200/Stirling+Trip+255.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5021339602485472850" />Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-67914856009012250392007-01-16T14:06:00.000+08:002007-01-16T14:16:53.339+08:00Assignment One - BeginningsHere is a screen shot of the Home page relating to Assignment One - "Resources for Advanced Internet Users". All the re arranging of my files and folders was more than a bit stressful. Learnt a lot though as I did not know before this tutorial of the importance of placement of files and images, to get them to come up on the web page. I have them all in the correct places now, and just when I thought I was getting somewhere, I up loaded my own 'test' page to the WebCt 'presentations' page and all but my images are showing. I have spent hours and hours trying to sort this out, by moving things around, re naming etc etc, and now I have resorted to asking for help on teh WebCt discussion forum. In the meantime, I am lurking between this tutorial and the rest of mod 3 and mod 4 simultaniously. Hopefully it will all fall in to place by 26th.

Independent Practice

Find some sites on the Internet that intrigue you. What are the two graphic formats used for the World Wide Web?
A. jpeg and gif

2. How can a graphic file display on different computers?

A.The GIF compresses the picture information (reduces the file size) and translates it to binary code that can be sent over the Internet. GIF compression is most effective on graphics that have contiguous areas of solid color, and compression is even greater when the color is continuous in the horizontal direction. GIF images have the feature of defining a color to be "transparent" so images can appear to have non-rectangular boundaries. They can also be saved in the "interlaced" format so that when you see a web page, the images start to appear soon and "dissolve" to the final image. See 'graphics a la web'
A. JPEG compression is very effective for photographic images where the colors can vary spatially over short distances ("grainy" images). JPEG offers some dramatic compression in filesize, sometimes by a factor of 10 (e.g. a 1500 kb file reduced to 150 kb), which may be at a trade-off for some image quality. JPEG images do not have the ability to have transparency. See 'graphics a la web'

3. What are some key points to consider when including graphics in web pages?

- Make sure the images add meaning to the page!

- Be conscious of size and keep images to a minimum of between 50k and 100k to avoid viewer from having to continually scroll down the page to see them

- Avoid colour gradients

- Opt for "no dithering" if possible when converting GIF images, to remove "noise".

- Remember that dark grey may not display well on Macintosh computer screens

- It is better to 'link' to images rather than display many on one page - saves time

4. How did you save the lava graphic for use in your WWW document?

Saved in 'My Web space' as "lava.gif"

PART 2

Review Topics

1. What is the HTML format for an inline image?

2. What type of tag must you put before an image tag to make the image appear on a separate line?
align=middle align=bottom or align=top

3. How did you add the lava picture to your document?

4. What does the alt="...." attribute do? What does the height="...." attribute do?

alt: tag allows for substitution of a descriptive string of text to hold the place of the image.

height: sets the height of the image in pixels.

Independent Practice

Add an inline image to your web page using a GIF picture file that is stored on your computer or one that you have downloaded from the Internet.

TICK.......Just Jacquihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13842641889414345766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6296164671029306510.post-24153703159824645952006-12-27T13:24:00.001+08:002006-12-27T15:13:02.984+08:00MODULE 3 - HTML TUTORIAL- Lists Lists and more Lists...Review Topics

1. How are lists valuable in a web page?

Many web pages display lists of items -- these may be items preceded with a "bullet"(Unordered) or a sequentially numbered list (Ordered).

These lists are easy to format in HTML, and they may even be nested (lists of lists) to produce an outline format.
